Pop is known for its glitzy and extravagant portrayal of the good life, and all that is encompassed within it. Most especially, sexuality.

Sexuality is the main selling point that this genre of music — and its many superstars — seeks to flaunt. And honestly, I see nothing at all wrong with that. It seems like in the cultural zeitgeist, there is always an unrelenting battle between any given generation’s pop idols and the conservative parental units that blast these sexy and not-so-bashful stars as the downfall of all things modest and reserved, viewing them as the reason their children are getting more and more sexually-charged pop culture exposure.

If it’s not Madonna being called the anti-Christian, then it’s Lady Gaga being called the devil incarnate. If it’s not Britney being called sex-crazed psychopath, then it’s Rihanna being called a slut and Ke$ha being called a wild-child. The cycle never seems to end.

But instead of pointing the finger at pop music’s stars — who do what they want regardless — maybe the responsibility of what children should and should not listen to should be put on the parents. In a column by Rebecca Hagelin for The Patriot Post, she alleges that pop music is becoming “another avenue for selling porn and sexualizing younger and younger children in the process.” Hagelin’s theory that pop music now-a-days is nothing more than soft-core porn leads her to the conclusion that monitoring children’s iPod playlist for unfamiliar and possibly explicit music is a good way to keep children safe from the “lewd performances” of singers like Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

Much to the chagrin of many in the teenage pop consumer market, maybe some monitoring of children’s music is a good thing. It’s a very widely accepted idea that children should not be listening to music they are not ready for, but blaming artists is not the right way to go about relieving these parental frustrations. There will come a time when children have to grow up, and they will more than likely be exposed to less than modest lyrics, but that is all part of growing and embracing all that pop music, and music in general, can do for individualism and creative personality.

And besides, who says we as kids even wanted these naughty and unabashed pop stars as role models, anyways? Yes, we love their music and art, and yes, we follow their every move on Twitter, but does that necessarily mean we look up to them as role models? In a Daily Mail UK column by Paul Connolly, he notes that “recent research suggests that our kids aren’t quite as dumb and impressionable as we’d sometimes like to think. According to this research 81% of children said that their parents were better role models than pop stars and footballers.”

“So, don’t like the look of a TV show or the new Rihanna single?” Connolly asks. “Then use the ‘off’ button and engage with your children, interact with them. It may take a little more effort than just sitting mutely in front of a TV screen but it works. It really is that simple.” Pop music, with all of its sexually charged lyrics, images, overtones, should be taken for what it is; art in a simple, fun, and upbeat form. There is no need to exaggerate and say that the stars and acts associated with the genre are evil and pornographic when, if you don’t like it, all you need to do is take your headphones off and listen to something else.

Most people wouldn’t normally drive nearly 400 miles from their dorm room in Phoenix to a concert/event in Los Angeles, but as a diehard “Directioner,” that is precisely what I did to see One Direction perform.

Although the British-Irish boy band has been on the scene since 2010 (as individual finalists on the original The X Factor in the UK), One Direction has just started making huge waves on American turf — with good reason.

After seeing these five UK imports perform live on stage, it is no exaggeration to say that the boys of One Direction — Brits Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Irishman Niall Horan — are not only extremely talented, but also know how to put on a good show.

A select group of fans (myself included) was given a special treat on April 1 when One Direction put on a surprise performance in downtown Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre. The performance, sponsored by VEVO Lift, was kept so hush-hush that fans in attendance were not even allowed to know about the venue ahead of time. Directioners, who were picked via an online contest, were bussed from LA’s Omni Hotel straight to the El Rey after getting their passes to the show.

The small crowd of diehard fans in attendance created an atmosphere of anxiousness, excitement and suspense. I wasn’t the only one in disbelief that the group I’d been obsessing over would soon be less than ten feet away from me singing my favorite songs.

All those feelings of impatience and angst were quickly put to rest when One Direction hit the stage.

One Direction performing at LA's El Rey Theatre.
“I think the show was pretty spectacular,” Arizona State University sophomore Gabrielle Castillo said. “I’m not sure how much of it they had planned out because the whole day seemed to be spontaneous in itself, but they put on a really good show.”

Although the set list only consisted of four songs, it was still a once in a lifetime performance recorded by VEVO. I found it almost like a dream that I was actually front and center seeing them perform.

“It was really surreal seeing One Direction,” said Christine Tran, a junior from Alhambra High School. “Being a fan since August I may not have been there from the start, but they’ve quickly made a place in my heart.”

The uniqueness of the concert made a strong impact on audience members.

“I’ve been to quite a few shows in my life, like The Maine and All Time Low, but this mini show was by far the craziest I’ve been to,” Tran said. “Throughout the whole show, the energy levels from the band and the audience were high and it was extremely fun.”

The whole time, the small crowd of just over 100 people was jumping around, screaming, and just plain fangirling all over the place. Tran attributed the random antics between band members and their frequent interactions with the fans as ways the band kept the audience going. Not a person in the place seemed displeased, despite the long wait and secrecy.

Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles of One Direction sing to a packed house at LA's El Rey Theatre. Photo: Raffy Ermac/ NGJ

“Even though the fans had to go through so much, it was worth it. The boys put on an amazing show, and they were all flawless,” Crescenta Valley High School junior Samantha Ramos said.

With vocals on-point, and a stage presence and charisma unusually high for people between the ages of 18 and 20, all members of One Direction did not disappoint.

“They are way better live,” El Camino College freshman Lupe Fuimaono said. “I just want to relive this night over and over again. They far surpassed any of the expectations I had. They were so energetic, and you can tell they love what they do — making Directioners’ hearts melt.”

It’s hard to believe that in just a few months One Direction has exploded onto the pop music scene. Their summer tour kicks off in late May, and I — along with the tons of other Directioners across the U.S. — will surely be along for the ride.

If you haven’t heard them, check out the video of their single “What Makes You Beautiful.”

It’s hard to believe that this year is already three months in. Music wise, 2012 has been a very interesting year. Since it is already towards the end of March and spring is right around the corner, we at NextGen Journal thought it would be cool to recap what music lovers have been tuning in to since the beginning of the year.

The year is still young, and without a doubt there will be more opportunities for earbud-melting hits, but here’s a list of the top 10 music videos of 2012…so far.

10. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen

Although this homemade webcam video featuring Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, and Carlos Pena (of Big Time Rush) is more popular than the actual music video, it’s noteworthy that all these teenies have helped to at least get the Canadian star Carly Rae Jepsen’s name out there.

9. Somebody That I Used To Know – Gotye feat. Kimbra

This Aussie singer-songwriter utilizes nakedness, stop motion, paint and a feature with New Zealand songstress Kimbra in his visual for probably the catchiest breakup song of the year.

8. Safe & Sound – Taylor Swift feat. The Civil Wars

Featured on the soundtrack of the hugely anticipated book-turned-movie “The Hunger Games,” this video showcases an acoustic, folky side of Swift not normally seen in her typical country-pop hybrids.

7. Domino – Jessie J

The U.K. pop diva with incredibly strong vocals makes her presence known in this wonderfully vivid and colorful adaption of her Billboard Top 10 hit.

6. You Da One – Rihanna

Starting the year off with more controversy than most pop stars can handle in a lifetime, Rihanna still keeps it light, calm and cool, especially in this black and white video.

5. Glad You Came – The Wanted

This U.K. import is making waves with their incredibly infectious and club-themed music. Twenty-somethings everywhere are already jumping up and down and singing along to this chorus of “Glad You Came.”

4. Charlie Brown – Coldplay

This was the first song recorded for the Mylo Xyloto record, and the video just makes us all feel young. Who doesn’t want to join Coldplay in the club to party all night and simply be up to no good?

3. We Are Young – Fun. feat Janelle Monae

Nate Ruess’s uniquely rough voice is paired with scenes of a massive, chaotic bar fight. Throw in some Janelle Monae and you have the recipe for a song and video that millennials everywhere are completely enthralled and obsessed with. Who hasn’t found themselves humming this song at any given point in the day?

2. Blue Jeans – Lana Del Rey

After starting this year off with a, as Kristen Wiig puts it, “stiff, distant, and weird” live performance on Saturday Night Live, Del Rey has redeemed herself with this sultry, sexy and oh-so-retro chic video to her single “Blue Jeans” from her most recent album, “Born To Die.”

1. N***** in Paris – Jay-Z & Kanye West

This seizure-inducing epic of a music video is so overly simplistic that it is nothing short of evil genius. Visually stunning mirrored graphics of lions, churches, lasers, and patterns are paired with live footage of Jay and Kanye during the last year’s smash Watch the Throne Tour to create the most artistic, the most trippy, and the most excitingly oddball music video of the year

thus far.

———–

That was a list of our picks for the best music videos of 2012 so far. Would you agree? Disagree? What are some of your picks? Leave us a comment below and let us know!

Recently, an uproar shook the music business when rumors of Rihanna collaborating with ex-boyfriend and abuser Chris Brown proved true. The two former lovers collaborated, after three years of almost no public communication, on Brown’s remix for the song “Turn Up the Music” and the remix for Rihanna’s single “Birthday Cake.”

Following the immediate aftermath, which included fans breaking her CDs in anger and people boycotting her music, one thing is clear about the two working together — both fans and critics are quite unhappy.

“Birthday Cake” was more controversial, considering the Rihanna Navy had waited since November of last year to hear the full remix of the song and to see who would be featured on it.

Rihanna even took to Twitter, asking her followers in early February “Now here’s the trick question! #IF I put collaborator on it, who would u wanna see lick the icing off????? #CAKE I need somebody #DIRRRTY on my Birthday #CAKE ;) lol And please!!!! No girls allowed on #CAKE.”

Brown was the last person fans thought Rihanna would pick for the track.

“I can’t believe she did this,” said Arizona State University freshman Daisy Prado, a fan of both Rihanna and Brown. “I really don’t think they should work together, and it’s a slap in the face to her fans and all the people who look up to her. Rihanna was hailed as a role model against violence. She survived it, and handled herself so well afterwards. And then she does this? It doesn’t set the right example.”

Even with all the backlash from fans, both Rihanna and Brown have been carrying themselves in the public eye as nonchalantly as ever. Brown has continued in his reckless behavior, recently getting into trouble for stealing a fan’s phone. Meanwhile, Rihanna is acting — and tweeting — as if there is nothing wrong with working with someone who once violently assaulted her.

After the remixes for “Turn Up the Music” and “Birthday Cake” were released, MTV News released the chilling police report from the night of the incident, which was the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards.

The report stated, “Robyn F. (Rihanna’s birth name) turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.’s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.”

“The police report was crazy,” said Tahja Mack, also a freshman studying at Arizona State University, in response to the haunting details of the incident provided by the police. “Girls everywhere will think it’s okay to stay in an abusive relationship,” said Mack. “I don’t think there were any real consequences for Brown and his actions. His fans and his music are still the same.”

Back in 2009, shortly after the assault transpired, Rihanna went on the record telling Diane Sawyer in a 20/20 interview, “I don’t have a desire at all to be with him. I don’t see how we could get back together.”

Could Rihanna have had a change of heart since then? Of all the songs on which to collaborate with Brown, she picked the most sexually charged and explicit song on her “Talk That Talk” album. Some of Brown’s verse reads, “I wanna fu** you right now, been a long time, I’ve been missing that body.”

What image does this send to the many Rihanna admirers across the country — that it’s okay to reunite with your abuser as long as he is good in bed? It’s a shameless and irresponsible defamation of what is actually one of the catchiest songs on her album.

However, Rihanna has already made it clear that she has no interest in being a role model for millions of fans worldwide. Earlier last year — in usual Rihanna fashion — she tweeted, “The music industry isn’t exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US! It’s your job to make sure they dont turn out like US.”

And yet, millions of young girls around the world look up to Rihanna. She is is a role model, whether she likes it or not.

“I know you don’t want to be one, but you are,” said Mack.

“She is a public fugure, a trendsetter. Of course she is going to become this role model,” said Prado. “We shouldn’t expect artists to be perfect, because they’re not, but Rihanna, it’s time for you to put on your big-girl pants and accept the fact that you are a role model.”

Forgiveness is one thing. Rihanna can forgive Brown all she wants, as it is a key part of the healing process and a major factor in her being able to move on from what happened. Heck, if she wants to she can even hang out with him at her 24th birthday party — which did happen. It’s her private life, and she can handle it the way she sees fit.

But to publicly interact with Brown on Twitter and to go so far as to collaborate with him — with extremely graphic lyrics no less — is playing even the most loyal of her fans for fools — fools who are still angry about what Brown did to her on the eve of the 2009 Grammys.

This stunt is a slap in the face to her true fans, who will stay by her side and listen to her music no matter what. And more importantly, it shows a complete disregard for the millions of young girls for whom Rihanna is a role model, no matter what she tries to tell herself.

Known for her eccentric stage antics and amazingly unconventional wardrobe, this pop star is now also making waves for her performance at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. Surprise — it isn’t Lady Gaga. This year’s spotlight of controversy shone on none other than pop-rap hybrid Nicki Minaj.

When she burst onto the scene in 2009 with her verse in the Young Money hit “Bed Rock,” people became automatically smitten with her quirky raps and the unique way she changes up personas and characters in her voice.

But how much is too much when it comes to her peculiarity and sheer bizarreness? Has she been around long enough to pull some of the odd antics and controversies from which stars such as Lady Gaga and Madonna have made their names?

According to the critics, the answer is a mixed one.

In a report by E! Online, “The Catholic League wasted no time in condemning the ‘Roman Holiday’ rapper for her exercise in exorcism on the awards show stage—which came complete with choir boys, bishops, holy water, faux possessions, levitation and even a confessional.”

The reasons behind The Catholic League’s heated response to Minaj’s Grammy routine are numerous, but one could say it started with the many religious references and artifacts used when Minaj debuted her new song “Roman Holiday.”

During the performance, Minaj’s alter-ego Roman was exorcised, complete with a “Pope” and “altar boys,” stain-glass windows emulating an actual church, and a sample of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” a spiritual song usually sung around the holidays.

While The Catholic League absolutely hated the theatrical performance, others didn’t think it was so bad.

In a report by MTV News, Laurieann Gibson (who choreographed the performance) said, “I’m not really moved by what people say; I’m moved by what it is and again just a big ‘thank you’ to the Grammys. I was super-proud about the execution and really excited about how well Nicki performed.”

While Minaj is dramatic to say the least, she stirs controversy from her many alter-egos, in particular this very perplexing Roman character.

“Roman is a crazy boy who lives in me,” Minaj said in the MTV Documentary My Time Now. “He says the things that I don’t want to say… I think he was born out of rage, so he bashes everyone and threatens to beat people. He’s violent. I want him to leave, but he can’t. He is here for a reason, people have brought him out.”

Whoever Roman is, he sure knows how to make an interesting Grammy debut. He is already the centerpiece of two singles, “Roman Holiday” and “Roman Reloaded.” Both will appear on the upcoming album “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” yet another homage to Minaj’s alter-ego.

Those singles, along with “Stupid Hoe” and recently released “Starships,” comprise a preview of what the album will sound like — a cluster of really outlandish pop rhymes fused with an ounce or two of hip-hop. If you can even call it hip-hop.

The most promising single to date is “Stupid Hoe.” With its uber catchy disses paired with cutesy vocals, it is reminiscent of the old Nicki her fans (“Barbz and Kenz” as she refers to them) fell in love with in the first place.

Although her musical credibility is sidelined a bit, there is still a firm belief that Minaj can be the most perfect mixture of a rapper and pop star that our generation has seen.

Hopefully the album, due out April 3, will produce more than just one good song, and hopefully, Roman’s presence on the new album won’t be a hindrance to what should solidify Nicki Minaj’s takeover of the female rap game.

With the Grammy Awards less than a week away, NextGen continues our series of spotlights on lesser-known nominated artists.

ABOUT THE SERIES — Over the past couple of years, the Grammy Awards have slowly started to shift away from straight mainstream nods and towards recognizing musicians in more obscure genres. As this year’s event is quickly approaching, we present the third portion of a multi-part feature that looks to give some insight and exposure to the lesser known artists that will be on full display Feb. 12.

Check out the last two installments, spotlighting Best New Artist nominee Bon Iver and Best Rock Performance nominee The Decemberists.

Always somewhat overlooked by the masses of award show enthusiasts and pop culture zealots, the dance/electronic genre has been making its presence known in the music industry over the past few months. This year’s Grammy Awards certainly reflect that, with the nominations chock-full of some dance music heavy-weights that will surely make the “Best Dance/Electronica Album” award a close race.

One of the most popular, prolific and formidable names amongst the list of nominees for this year’s “Best Dance/Electronica Album” award, is deadmau5 (pronounced Dead-Mouse) for his album 4×4=12. Known for his extreme synthesizing, modern beats and the eccentric brightly-lit mouse helmet he parades around in, deadmau5 seems to be the favorite among the crowd of dubstep-loving college students.

“I think he’s the guy who kick-started the whole house/techno/dubstep scene,” said Brett Cowett, a sophomore at Arizona State University. “You just want to dance to his songs and they blend together seamlessly.”

Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario as Joel Zimmerman, deadmau5 really broke into the music scene in 2008, when he collaborated with the artist Kaskade for the song “Move For Me.”

The song hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart, and put him on the radar to become one of the most well-known acts in the electronica world.

His most recent project 4×4=12 — for which he got the Grammy nod — was well-received by fans and critics alike.

“Joel Zimmerman recalls the salad days of Daft Punk, when cartoon robots ruled clubland,” writer Will Hermes said in his review of 4×4=12 in Rolling Stone. “4×4=12 is audacious, mixing generic house grooves with eclectic fare like “Bad Selection,” a kinetic jam with dog-whistle synth builds. The masterstroke is “Raise Your Weapon,” which breaks down into a sick dubstep beat.”

College students agree.

“I love the pure chaos of his sound, but I also love how controlled his music is,” Cowett said.

“He puts on a really sick DJ and lights show,” said Jeff Pouliot of Arizona State, who has seen deadmau5 live in concert. “He’s cool and really gets into his performance, and they really make a production out of it.”

But what exactly is deadmau5? A musician? A performer? A DJ? None of the above.

As said in the biography on his official website, “Joel Zimmerman doesn’t like being called a DJ. The dance music phenomenon from Toronto, better known as deadmau5, rolls his eyes at the description which he sees as a hopelessly outdated way of describing what he does. His sets are closer to live performances as he assembles tracks on the fly using cutting edge computer technology, including software that he’s helped to write himself.”

Whatever he considers himself, and whatever he is doing with his music, he is obviously doing something right. When it comes down to it, the battle for the title of “Best Dance/Electronica Album,” will be a close one. The category has loads of other worthy acts like Robyn and David Guetta. The main competition, though, looks to be between beginner Skrillex, and pioneering mogul deadmau5.

While Skrillex is also gaining popularity throughout college campuses, deadmau5′s unique qualities still make him the favorite for the award.

“Skrillex has hits now, but he is too repetitive,” Cowett said. “deadmau5 is better, because he puts a lot of work into his stuff, and it ends up being really good.”

“[Skillrex] has good mixes, but his live shows suck,” Pouliot added. “deadmau5 really makes a performance out of his music.”

It is just possible that Music’s Biggest Night will be honoring a man wearing his trademark LED “mau5head.”

The People’s Choice Awards aired last night with countless awards given to the best of the best in all forms of entertainment, including music, movies, and television. What makes the PCAs so special, though, is that it is one of the few award shows voted on exclusively by fans, who cast their votes for their favorite artists, actors, movies, and programs.

Red carpet coverage, always a fun way to see the stars and what they’re wearing, was streamed live on the PCA website via UStream and Reelz Channel, giving fans all across the country live, up-to-the-minute footage of their favorite celebrities. Live tweeting also made it even easier for fans to connect with what was going on at the red carpet in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

The show started off an a light note, with host Kaley Cuoco of “The Big Bang Theory” poking fun at Neil Patrick Harris and his addiction to hosting and musical numbers.

The night was given some musical relief, as well, with some performances by country star Faith Hill and PCA Favorite Pop Artist Demi Lovato, who was stunning in her performance of “Give Your Heart a Break.”

Noticeably lacking from the festivities, though, was fan favorite Katy Perry, who withdrew her scheduled appearance from the PCAs after her divorce from ex-hubby Russell Brand. The pop star took to Twitter to apologize for her absence, saying: “Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the People’s Choice Awards. I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed! #KATYCATS.”

With a plethora of awards, it seemed like almost everyone went home a winner. Some of the top nods went to Maroon 5, Nina Dobrev, Neil Patrick Harris, Lady Gaga, and the cast of Harry Potter.

Despite the fact that these awards were all given to more than deserving and very entertaining individuals, this year’s PCAs simply did not deliver on entertainment, dragging on without much action. Let’s be honest, though; the PCAs served their purpose: to act as a precursor to more serious and more thrilling displays (Oscars, Grammys, VMAs, etc.).

Although not as prestigious (or exciting) as the Grammys or the Academy Awards, the greatest thing about this type of award show is that it lets the fans themselves decide who gets the award and who in fact is the best of the year.

The holiday season is in full swing, and as the semester winds down and comes to close, what better way to spend the cold winter nights at home than by warming up by the fire and listening to some Christmas classics!

There are so many renditions and so many versions of the holiday melodies we know and love, and it’s hard sometimes to keep track of them all as the years go by. But to make your holiday listening easy and joyful, here’s a list of the top 10 Christmas songs that will surely put you in a jubilant mood!

10. I’ll Be Home For Christmas

Best renditions: Bing Crosby; Tony Bennett

The reason this is a Christmas standard is because of the masses of homesick patrons who feel and yearn for the nostalgia of being home for the holidays. Always a great listen whilst driving and/or flying thousands of miles to go back home to family for Christmas!

9. White Christmas

Best Renditions: Bing Crosby; Lady Gaga (her version, added verse and all, is to die for!)

There are a lot of people across the country that won’t actually experience a white Christmas, but this song is an essential no matter what part of the country you live in. It’s that basic yearning that everyone has to experience a perfect snowy day for the holidays.

8. Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Renditions: Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Jordan; She & Him (they do a new modern twist to the old-time classic)

Although not technically a Christmas song, this playfully flirty and antagonizing melody plays on a dilemma that plagues many a couple. To stay the night or not to stay the night? The fact that it depicts such dilemma on a snowy day make it a Christmas time/winter favorite.

7. This Christmas

Best Renditions: Donny Hathaway; Chris Brown

Where most Christmas songs are standard, “This Christmas” is much more soulful and has an R&B flavor to it, making it all the more fun to sing along to after the presents have been opened and a few glasses of eggnog have been consumed.

6. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Best Renditions: Brenda Lee

It’s hard to not want to dance and sing every time this song plays during the holidays. I, much to my family’s chagrin, have even found myself trying to imitate this song’s choreography as performed in the movie Mean Girls. Hey, it’s the holidays; you’re supposed to embarrass yourself a little.

5. Last Christmas

Best Renditions: Wham!

A non-happy Christmas song? Almost unheard of! But Wham!’s very popular portrayal of a not-so-happy holiday shows that sometimes it is not all fruitcake and candy canes in the month December.

4. Santa Baby

Best Renditions: Eartha Kitt; Madonna

Your inner gold digger will be automatically unleashed when the words to this song play on the radio. But this song is so surprisingly cute and outrageous, everyone will want to become a Christmas seductress and release their sexiest “purrrrr.” All in the spirit of gifts of course.

3. Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

Best Renditions: John & Yoko; Maroon 5

There is no better tandem than a good Christmas tune and social activism. Written as a protest song in response to the Vietnam War, this song is a great alternative to the usual yuletide hullaballoo of snowflakes and reindeer. If you like this, also listen to McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime.

2. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire)/Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Best Renditions: Who hasn’t done their own versions of these song??

These songs ARE Christmas. Period. End of story. Everything the holiday exemplifies (giving, togetherness, family, nostalgia) is brought to the forefront of your mind when you hear any good rendition of these songs. If you go through the holidays without ever hearing these songs, you’re living under a rock.

1. All I Want For Christmas Is You

Best Renditions: Mariah Carey (Hers is the only version that matters in popular culture)

The moment this song plays in any public setting (malls, the grocery store, that sort of thing), every girl, and a lot of boys, between the age of 14-29 automatically find themselves singing along. And that’s more than okay. This song is both a pop music phenomenon and a fairly recent Christmas classic. Everyone wants that special someone by their side during the holidays, and this is a song most of us young’uns with a heart can relate to.

“I just want you for my own, more than you could ever know, make my wish come true, all I want for Christmas, is you…”

Rihanna's latest album, Talk That Talk, dropped on Tuesday. For her latest release, the pop music superstar gives us a sexier, more explicit work that still manages to embody everything great about pop.

The post Rihanna Knows How to “Talk That Talk” appeared first on NextGen Journal.

Rihanna is surely one of the most prolific recording artists of the last decade. With at least one release every year since her debut in 2005, Rihanna never leaves her fans, the “Rihanna Navy,” without new material.

Rihanna continued her tradition of inexhaustible and high-volume musical content with her hugely anticipated, sixth studio album, “Talk That Talk.”

Although the album in its entirety leaked on the internet before its November 21 release, the hype was still apparent. Fans went in droves to go buy a copy of the album or download it from the iTunes music store, where it is currently number one in over 15 countries, including the US, Canada, and the UK.

It doesn’t take a genius music analyst to realize what is inherently different about this album. “Talk That Talk” is RiRi’s dirtiest, sleaziest, and most sexually explicit album to date. And that is what makes it a pop music masterpiece.

With lines like “suck my cockiness, lick my persuasion,” and “I want to f*** you right now,” the singer forgoes any attempt at subtlety and refinement in exchange for being exactly who she is: a sexually-charged and in-your-face diva that isn’t afraid to tell it how it is.

Where “Rated R” went dark and deep, and “Loud” went up-tempo and popular, “Talk That Talk” goes sexy, naughty, and feisty…with a little Dubstep thrown into the mix.

Rihanna also elicits the help of Calvin Harris for the uber upbeat and dancy lead single “We Found Love,” and the HOV himself Jay-Z for the title-track “Talk That Talk,” but most of the songs on the record are simply the Bajan pop goddess belting it out by herself, showing off her intoxicating voice that goes well with slower melodic songs like “Farewell” and bubbly, radio-ready hits like “You Da One” and “Do Ya Thang.”

Overall, “Talk That Talk” blends everything good and worthwhile about pop music. If you want sexy, listen to “Cockiness (Love It)” and “Birthday Cake.” If you want some mellow, laid back love tunes, listen to “We All Want Love.” If you’re in the clubbing mood, listening to “Where Have You Been” (probably the best song on the album) will surely help you set the mood.

Rihanna has gone far since her fresh-faced days as a newbie in 2005. It is now 2011, and “Talk That Talk is definitely worthy of an “Album of the Year” nomination.

“Talk That Talk” will have new listeners and royal fans alike proud to come aboard the Rihanna Navy.

So we all know art imitates life. There are books about coming of age, movies about falling in love, and TV show about studying for midterms and forgetting what you did last night.

The latter is not a new phenomenon. There have been TV shows about college and college life since before most of Generation Y was born. Here’s a list of the best college TV shows, both past and present, that will have you screaming “Go U!” on the sidelines, and perhaps even strike a chord in the hearts of our inner frat boy/sorority girl.

Community

Joel McHale’s first non-stand-up effort into acting, Community is a comical, no, hilarious, portrayal of the “community college rut” some people have to endure. According to the first episode’s review in Newsday, “Community can be fresh, funny, smart and extremely aware of its own cleverness; it also can be terrifically odd – odd good, or odd bad, or sometimes odd-good-bad-strange all at once. By the time you get to the second episode, you’ll see exactly what I mean.”

Greek

The most enjoyable depiction of Greek life on a Midwestern college campus, Greek (or Gr∑∑k) was a pleasant mix of comedy and drama, while also maintaining a somewhat believable plotline. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette described it as “fresh” and “a more light-hearted and, perhaps, more realistic depiction of college life.” The show was one of ABC Family’s more popular series to date.

Saved by the Bell-The College Years

Although not as good as its high school predecessor, the college spin-off of Saved by the Bell starred 4 of the original cast members going off to Cal U with the same crazy antics and debauchery of their younger days at Bayside. Mark-Paul Gosselar and Mario Lopez were still the quintessential dreamboats of that day, and more than a few guys to this day have crushes on Kelly Kapowski aka Tiffani-Amber Thiessen. The College Years was always good for a laugh, even though it didn’t really illustrate what the college lifestyle is like at all.

Glory Daze (Kinda)

The short-lived TBS comedy was the ideal of what typical college freshman think rushing a fraternity is like. Although very predictable, with a cast of cliché 80’s bros with the sole mission of trying to get laid (and maybe, MAYBE, get an education), it was surprisingly humorous. The Hollywood Reporter even described it as “unexpectedly funny, at times heartwarming and the sheen of nostalgia covers up a lot of stuff you might otherwise get picky about.” Just don’t watch the reruns expecting a terribly intriguing plotline.

Blue Mountain State

Although one of the first TV shows to depict the hard-partying frolics of a state school’s football team, it has been getting a bad rep from the likes of Variety Magazine, which described it as “Guy-oriented.” Variety also went on to say that BMS “appears to possess a clear idea what men are supposed to like — a tawdry combination of babes, violence and near-death experiences.” Although the image of college women and alcoholic binges is crudely painted in this show, it is worth a good laugh or two. Sad to say, but it is pretty funny seeing dumb jocks make fools of themselves on a daily basis, with the added drama of girls and parties.

Felicity

Perhaps the most serious of all the shows in the college TV genre, Felicity lasted four seasons (freshman year to senior year) and was one of Keri Russell’s defining roles. During its most popular season, the show drew in an excess of 4.4 million viewers to the screen. It was the archetypal girl finding herself in college drama, and it was always a feel-good show for its loyal, almost cult-like following.

Rihanna's new single dropped last week, revealing a new sound for one of this generation's most iconic pop figures. NGJ's Raffy Ermac looks at Rihanna's rise to superstardom and what steps she plans to take next.

The post Rihanna: Past, Present, and Future appeared first on NextGen Journal.

Rihanna released her newest single “We Found Love” last week (produced by DJ/singer-songwriter combination Calvin Harris), ushering in a new era for one of pop music’s most well-known, complex, and prolific superstars.

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on the Caribbean island of Barbados in 1988, Rihanna broke out into the pop music scene with 2005’s “Pon De Replay.” Although a hit at the time, charting high on the Billboard Hot 100 in July of 2005, the single and RiRi’s debut album, Music of the Sun, did not fully showcase what she was capable of artistically.

Less than a year after Music of the Sun’s release, Rihanna took a turn for the more urban/R&B-Soul with her sophomore effort, A Girl Like Me, which spawned the number one hits “S.O.S.” and “Unfaithful.” The latter was a more intimate peek into what Rihanna is like emotionally. Although more of a commercial success than her debut effort, going platinum in a matter of a few weeks; but listeners were still unsure as to what Rihanna was (or rather what she was capable of) and of the star she could actually become.

Then Good Girl Gone Bad happened.

The third album, paired with a drastically new, sexier image, solidified what Rihanna set out to do in the first place: make music. And in a span of only two years, with three albums under her belt, she had sure made a lot.

“I’ve just never stopped making music. I love making music. That’s what I love to do. So I don’t feel like there’s any need to take a break unless I want to,” said Rihanna in December 2010’s Interview Magazine.

Good Girl Gone Bad showcased an abundance of catchy, dancehall inspired tunes that were edgy enough to demonstrate that she could change things up and prove to people she wasn’t a “one-hit wonder.” GGGB was also enough to satisfy her loyal fan’s appetite for her music, while sparking new fan’s interests with her newfound rebellious, badgirl persona.

Songs like “Umbrella,” “Don’t Stop the Music,” “Disturbia,” and “Take a Bow” were veritable pop anthems.

But while riding high on the success of GGGB, the infamous altercation between Rihanna and then-boyfriend Chris Brown the night before the 2009 Grammys broke headlines, and it seemed unclear as to what she was going to do next.

The images TMZ acquired from the Los Angeles Police Department showed a battered and bruised Rihanna. It didn’t take much time for the singer to physically heal and start going out on the town with the likes of other celebrity friends, most notably Katy Perry, but it was evident the emotional toll was taking longer to heal.

Instead of letting scandal and distress ruin her though, Rihanna channeled her pain and passion into her fourth studio album Rated R. The darkest and most personal of her album’s to date; it was not as much of a commercial hit as some of her past endeavors, but it was necessary in both the evolution of her career and the healing process.

If you asked what project of RiRi’s is the most accurate snapshot of her emotions and how she felt during one of the harder times in her life, the answer would be Rated R. It was definitely a shock to devoted listeners, especially considering she shaved off most of her hair and dawned mostly black and shoulder pads. But songs like “Russian Roulette” and “Hard” spawned from it, and helped people see what she was going through.

What I love most about Rihanna is she never leaves her fans hanging. Most of the “Rihanna Navy” superfans don’t even have to wait a year before she comes out with new material to keep us dancing and singing along.

Loud came at a pivotal time in Rihanna’s career. With another new hairdo (this time radical Red locks) and a soft, less edgy look, Rihanna made a, for lack of a better word, happy album.

“Only Girl in the World,” and “What’s My Name?,” were a complete 180 from the Rated R era of hurt and emotions. “S&M” and “Cheers (Drink to That)” was sexy, feisty, and fun, while “Man Down” went back to her Caribbean roots. The highlight of the album, however, was the Eminem collaboration, “Love the Way You Lie: Part II.” A slower, more soulful version of the radio version, it presented the feelings Rihanna held in during her hard times in 2009, but also displayed how she was over it, and how she was ready to move on and accept.

The ferocity she displayed in red tresses, as well the newfound sex appeal and happiness she exuded on stage during performances and on tour, made the Loud era a favorite amongst her fans.

So what’s next for music’s “it girl,” who parties with Katy Perry, hangs with the likes of Kanye West and Jay-Z, collaborates with Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj, and jokes that she’s in a relationship with Drake?

According to MTV News, Rihanna is already filming a video for “We Found Love,” (donning another naturally brown hairstyle), and her new album is set to drop on November 21. If it is in the trend of her previous albums, it is sure to please.

“You KNOW how I been lovin Dubstep since Rated R,” said Rihanna in a tweet about the new sound she is working on for the album.

With her massive sex appeal, her I-don’t-give-a fuck attitude, her catchy music, and soothingly pleasant, island-tinged voice, Rihanna is not going to go away any time soon. With a fresh look, and an even fresher sound, this new era is one to look forward to. Pretty soon, we’ll all be card-carrying members of the Rihanna Navy.

MTV's Awkward allows us to reminisce about the good, the bad, and the awkward times of high school, through the hilarious and endearing life of 15-year-old Jenna Hamilton.

MTV’s latest scripted comedy is a hit amongst the young college crowd, who can still reminisce about what it was like to be a very awkward and often very hilarious high-schooler.

The show centers around 15-year-old high school student Jenna Hamilton (played by the adorable brunette Ashley Rickards), who is, to put it bluntly, awkward. In every sense of the word.

Jenna instantly becomes ‘that girl’ in her school when a hilariously complicated mishap in her bathroom is mistakenly confused as an attempt at ending her own life. All caused by an anonymous letter telling her that with the way she is now, she could “disappear at any time and no one would notice.”

Along with a reputation for almost trying to kill herself, Jenna has a really young ditz and an overprotective buzzkill for a mother and father, a best friend whose prime concern is taking “red-cup pictures” and getting popular, and a bully who is constantly breathing down her neck making her life miserable.

And on top of that, she’s trapped in a love triangle with two of the most popular guys in school, Matty McKibben (who she casually hook ups with) and Jake Rosati (who she casually spilled her frustrations to and kissed).

Talk about awkward.

But whatever formula MTV used to produce this show, they know it is definitely working. In a report by Variety, the show has already been greenlit for a second season, and is currently drawing in almost 1.9 million viewers. One of the reasons this show is so popular is because of its drastically exaggerated depictions of high school life, and the drama commonly associated with it.

“I like the show because it’s funny and relatable, even in college. I watch it because it takes my mind off of everyday life and problems. I think it’s a real representation to some extent, like the boy drama and friend issues that main characters face. However I think the drama is over-exaggerated,” said April Fischer, a student at Arizona State University, and fan of Awkward.

It is at times a very dramatized version of what high school really is, especially whenever Jenna confronts her archenemy and school bad girl Sadie Saxton (played by Molly Tarlov), whose trademark is being a total bitch in general and retorting, “You’re welcome” after insulting her peers. But that’s the reason people watch. The drama in Awkward equates to pure comedic genius.

“I don’t think I would change anything about it because the whole reason I love it is for the drama and quirky characters,” said Fischer.

Besides the cruel bully and the fake almost-suicide, Awkward is an overall feel-good show. Throughout the 30 minute long program, Jenna blogs about her feelings of what it is like to be going through what she is going through, and coming from a college student who was once a moody high-schooler, her commentary is relatable and easy to connect with, which is probably the main reason to watch the show. It deals with sometimes touchy subjects, but puts them in a comedic and applicable light for young people.

Although we’re already in college and high school is a thing of the past, there is no better way to relive the moments that did, and the ones you’re sad that didn’t, happen than by watching MTV’s hit teen comedy series, Awkward. Tune in to MTV tonight at 11:30/10:30c to see what the buzz is about.

There’s nothing like fall: the leaves are changing colors, the air starts getting chilly, and the television we love comes back in full force.

Entertainment Weekly recently compiled a list of “40 Fall TV Shows We’re Psyched About,” and while many of the programs mentioned are high-quality entertainment worth getting excited for, there is no way that a college student can keep up with all 40 of those shows (unless of course you’re a business major).

To make sense of it all, here’s a condensed list of some of the best TV shows you can be looking forward to this autumn.

The Vampire Diaries

Season premiere: Sept. 15 at 8pm, CW

Still wildly popular among the tweens and twenty-somethings populating college campuses nationwide, The Vampire Diaries returns for its third season with as much blood-sucking seduction and drama as ever. According to the official website, “Season three opens the door to the history of Klaus and The Original Family, as Klaus’ motives for wanting Stefan on his side are finally revealed. As Stefan sinks deeper into the dark side, Damon and Elena struggle with the guilt of their growing bond, even as they work together to bring Stefan back from the edge.”

Playboy Club

Series premiere: Sept. 19 at 10pm, NBC

One of the many new shows to hit the silver screen this fall, Playboy Club stars Eddie Cibrian as the slick and debonair Nick Dalton, a Chicago attorney who loves to schmooze with many a model and other powerful socialites associated with the Playboy brand. With a cast of beautiful women and smooth players living the high life, the show promises to be entertaining, if lacking in substance. You’ll want to check it out while you can… http://nextgenjournal.com/2011/09/up-for-the-axe-new-shows-most-likely-to-be-cancelled/

The X Factor

U.S. series premiere: Sept. 21 at 8pm, FOX

Set to debut this month is the U.S. adaption of the UK talent show favorite. Judges include American Idol’s exes Simon Cowell (the brains behind the show) and Paula Abdul, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, and Island Def Jam music industry heavy-weight Antonio “L.A.” Reid (who has produced records for the likes of Usher, Mariah Carey and Jay-Z to name a few). According to Entertainment Weekly, unlike other talent shows The X Factor “features both solo and group acts and no upper age limit.” As long as there is something to save the masses from American Idol humdrum, people will be watching it.

2 Broke Girls

Series premiere: Sept. 19 at 8:30pm, CBS

According to the show’s website, “2 Broke Girls is a comedy about two young women waitressing at a greasy spoon diner who strike up an unlikely friendship in the hopes of launching a successful business – if only they can raise the cash.” The show is executive produced by Michael Patrick King (of Sex and the City) and stars relative newbies Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs. The previews look hilarious, and it is definitely relateable to college students (the being broke part at least), so add this to your DVR for those long nights in the dorms when you need a quick laugh and there is nothing really important to do.

Relive this year's MTV Video Music Awards with this list of the best and most memorable moments of VMA 2011. NGJ's Entertainment Correspondent Raffy Ermac breaks down everything from Gaga's alter ego to Beyonce's baby bump.

The post VMAs 2011: Good, Bad, and Pregnant appeared first on NextGen Journal.

In case you missed it, here are the top ten stories from last night’s MTV Video Music Awards:

10. The Pre-Show

Hosted by Selena Gomez (although Sway did a much better job of interviewing people and playing host to the masses), the pre-show is where the stars showed off their fun and funky wardrobe choices (baby bumps for some), and a performance by Cobra Starship of their new single “You Make Me Feel” set the mood for the rest of the night’s stellar musical numbers.

9. Jo Calderone’s spiel

Lady Gaga cross dressing as her alter ego from the “You And I” video as she opened up the night’s ceremony with an off the wall monologue, was the first… highlight (?) of the night. According to MTV, Gaga’s inspiration for the oddball speech came to her quite fast. “It came as quickly as the last one did,” Gaga said. “Any good performance flows out easily. If I have to think about it too much, something is wrong.” Gaga as Calderone emerged on stage and began, “Hey. My name is Jo Calderone and I was an a–hole. Gaga? Yeah, her. Lady Gaga. She left me. She said it always starts out good and then the guys, meaning me, I’m one of the guys, we get crazy. I did. I got crazy, but she’s f—ing crazy too, right? I mean, she’s f—ing crazy.” “He” then continued on detailing his relationship with the star. It was weird. It was Gaga. What else is new.

8. Tyler the Creator’s crude acceptance speech

After winning the fan-chosen award for Best New Artist (the likes of which have been awarded to Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber in the past) for his video “Yonkers,” Tyler the Creator wasn’t shy about unleashing a few expletives during his speech, evidently with no regard for who may be viewing. A bad choice, considering earlier this year he was quoted as saying “If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele’s.” Humility is clearly not one of Tyler’s strong points.

7. Jay-Z and Kanye West: “Otis”

The stellar performance of the latest single from the hip-hop duo’s masterpiece of an album “Watch the Throne” was almost interrupted by a crazed fan rushing onto the stage. (Reminiscent of when Lil’ Mama took the stage whilst Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performed in 2009.) Luckily enough, security escorted the overzealous fan away from Jay and Kanye before he could get too close. Security risk aside, Kanye has come full circle in his VMA history, from a whole venue of people booing him at the mere mention of his name to a room full of thunderous applause as he performed with father-to-be Jay-Z.

6. Adele “Someone Like You”

Although often criticized for not being the most vibrant of performers and generally sitting down or standing in her music videos, with the vocal ability Adele exhibited in her performance, there is no need for her to do anything but sing her heart out.

5. Britney Spears Tribute

Britney’s pop icon status was solidified with a tribute to her long and illustrious career with a short dance number. She was later awarded a tribute Moonman, named after Michael Jackson, and almost shared in a kiss with Lady Gaga, who was still playing Jo Calderone. The two later had a few kind words to say about Beyoncé, as they segued into the pop diva’s performance.

4. Amy Winehouse memorial

The late pop star was remembered with a humorous but sincere monologue by Russell Brand and Tony Bennett and a rendition of “Valerie” by Bruno Mars. Amy’s soulful voice and incredible talent were both remembered and missed.

3. Lady Gaga

The only way for Gaga to have truly outdone herself was indeed, to dress like a fictional character of the opposite sex. No one else seemed to see it coming, but with Gaga, no one ever does. Jo Calderone did make the entire night interesting to say the least, but perhaps a little more of the rich and fabulous wardrobe-changing Gaga her fans know and love would have been better than the Jo Calderon she-man who references touching himself to Britney Spears.

2. Beyoncé reveals her Baby Bump

The announcement of Beyoncé’s pregnancy spread like wildfire on Twitter after she showed up to the pre-show in a billowing orange dress that flattered her gorgeous figure and the now famous baby bump. News of a celebrity pregnancy is huge in the entertainment industry, and Beyoncé absolutely stole last night’s show.

1. Beyoncé’s return to the VMA stage

A year off from the music business and a number one album later, Beyoncé returned to the VMA stage in an old-school inspired performance of “Love On Top.” Besides an absolutely flawless rendition of the song, she unbuttoned her jacket at the end to show off her baby bump, and the entire crowd went crazy in applause, while Gaga and Kanye gave Jay-Z some congratulatory rousing. Although she wasn’t the closing number, the spotlight was definitely shining on B and her new baby.

This Sunday marks the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, and the excitement is bigger than ever, with a stage chock full of superstar performances and awards to fit every aspect of the music video world.

The Nokia Theatre is set to host this year’s ceremony, which, considering the antics and surprises of VMAs in years past, is going to be nothing short of an entertainment industry extravaganza.

As previously reported by NextGen Journal, the roster of stars gracing the stage this year include Adele, Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars, and Chris Brown.

New additions to the lineup have been added, most notably VMA favorites Beyoncé and Lady Gaga.

According to an article on Spin Magazine’s News In Brief website, the new queen of pop is going to perform the opening number of this year’s awards, but in keeping with Gaga’s eccentric persona, she announced so in a very unconventional way. A simple press release wouldn’t suffice for the less-than-typical vocalist, as a few hundred of her fans, or “Little Monsters” as they’re known in the entertainment world, let loose a huge banner announcing her as the opening act of the VMAs.

Beyoncé was also added as a performer last minute. The announcement of her act arrived via MTV News early Wednesday morning.

“The previous recipient of nine Moonmen, including 2009′s Video of the Year award for ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),’ [Beyoncé] will join the lineup of 2011 VMA performers, which already includes Lady Gaga, Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Young the Giant, Pitbull and Ne-Yo,” read the article on the official VMA website.

As with every award show, presenters are key, and compliment the already star studded register of musical acts. MTV announced the likes of Jared Leto, Drake, and Kim Kardashian.

Voting for your favorite artists is drawing near to a close, but the “Best New Artist” category is still open, and will be announced at the end of the show. Nominees for various awards include Katy Perry (leading the group with an impressive 9 nominations), Adele, Bruno Mars, newcomer Kreayshawn, and fangirl favorite Justin Bieber.

Be sure to watch MTV Sunday night at 9pm to see which of your favorite artists wins the coveted Moonman award at this year’s VMAs.
